Image captionHere I'll be doing a demonstration on how to measure the tyre tread depth of your tyres.  Before we get started there are certain things which tread depth can tell you beyond the visual inspection of the tyre.  Inspection tyres have incorrect pressure there's a fault with suspension components, unbalanced tyre and alignment issue, worn steering or suspension components or a fault with the tyre. First inspecting the shoulder of the tyre, which is where the tread starts as the sidewall ends here we are looking for a small error which indicates where the wear bars are located within the tyre treads.

Some may have a text as well which may be written in such a way to break down the tyre into segments. If you are recording the numbers wear bars are raised portion within the tread groove which indicates how much life is left in the tyres. When the depth reaches ascertain measurement then the tyres are becoming unsafe to use and will need To be replaced. 

Now for the amount of wear bars across the tread face will differ depending on tyre design once the tread depth becomes too low the tyres do not provide adequate traction. Using a tyre tread depth gauge which is only a few pounds to purchase and very easy to use. These are available in variety of styles and can even be found a digital version. 

If you don't have one of these I'll mention an alternative method in a moment. First extend the plunger down all the way push the plunger down not on the wear bar though this measurement uses a total tread depth instead the plunger will stop be sure the outer stopper portion of the case is touching the tread face remove and then take the reading tyre tread depth gauges normally have both Imperial and metric values. 

First I'll be working with almost brand new tyres the first measurement is  seven millimetre wear looking for the measurement line that meets the casing of the tread depth gauge the second measurement is the same and finally the third measurement is also the same. 

An alternative method you can use a callipers are available in a variety of styles. The calliper is equipped with a depth gauge same type of idea as a tyre depth gauge. this method is certainly much more accurate though extend the depth gauge out to an appropriate length then insert in the groove same type of idea as a tyre tread depth gauge remove and record the measurement. If the wear bars are even with the tread phase therefore the tyre is in need of replacement. Tyre tread depth ratings will vary between countries so be sure to check your local governments regulations. In order to maintain equal tyre tread depth it's important to maintain your vehicle suspension and steering components it's also important to have your tyres rotated so if you do have negative camber when the tyres are switched from the other side. 

This will help promote even wear as a generalised recommendation tyre should be rotated every 12,000 kilometres or 8,000 miles but this may vary between manufacturers or drive systems as a tolerance value of between the tyre tread wear measurements. This can vary between manufacturers and drive systems as well from some manufacturer's specifications. If these values exceed these limits this can cause premature failure of drive components and false with the vehicle’s computer as each wheel will be turning at a different speed.
